But there&#8217;s one event from the past that many people don&#8217;t know about: the &#8220;Wedding of the Sea&#8221; ceremony that took place in the city for centuries.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoSubtitle\"><span class=\"MsoSubtleEmphasis\">The ceremony was held to commemorate Venice&#8217;s maritime power and to ask for protection from the sea. It took place every year on the Feast of the Ascension, which falls forty days after Easter. The Doge, the highest official of the Venetian Republic, would board a magnificent ship known as the &#8220;Bucintoro&#8221; and sail out to the Adriatic Sea.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoSubtitle\"><span class=\"MsoSubtleEmphasis\">There, he would pour a golden ring into the water, symbolizing Venice&#8217;s marriage to the sea. The ceremony was accompanied by music, fireworks, and a grand procession of boats. The people of Venice would line the canals to watch the spectacle and celebrate their city&#8217;s seafaring heritage.<\/span><\/p><h2>\u00a0The ceremony\u00a0<\/h2><p class=\"MsoSubtitle\"><span class=\"MsoSubtleEmphasis\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wedding-venice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The tradition of the Venice&#8217;s Wedding<\/a> of the Sea began in the 9th century, when the Venetians first began to assert their dominance over the Mediterranean. Over the centuries, the ceremony grew more elaborate and extravagant. The Bucintoro, which was originally a simple boat, became a gilded behemoth adorned with precious gems and fine art.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoSubtitle\"><span class=\"MsoSubtleEmphasis\">But the Wedding of the Sea came to an end in 1797, when Napoleon conquered Venice and put an end to the Venetian Republic. The Bucintoro was destroyed, and the ceremony was never held again.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoSubtitle\"><span class=\"MsoSubtleEmphasis\">Today, the only reminder of the Wedding of the Sea is a small plaque on the facade of St. Mark&#8217;s Basilica, which reads &#8220;Noli Me Tangere&#8221; (Do Not Touch Me). This plaque marks the spot where the Doge&#8217;s ship would anchor during the ceremony.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoSubtitle\"><span class=\"MsoSubtleEmphasis\">While the Wedding of the Sea may seem like a small and obscure event from Venice&#8217;s past, it is a testament to the city&#8217;s deep connection to the sea and its proud maritime history.
